satellite SDH/OC3 links
Satellite provides an interesting alternative to long distance backbone connections of an SDH/SONET network. It is also a quick and secure way to restore a cable or fiber connection that has failed.
More than ten years ago Newtec was the first company to provide modulators and demodulators capable of transmitting 155 Mbp/s in a single 72 MHz transponder, using standard OC3/STM1 interfaces.
Today with the latest transmission technologies and the DVB-S2 standard it is even possible to transmit the same speeds in a 54 Mhz transponder.
When transmitting so much data on satellite, two things matter:
- The bandwidth and power efficiency of the modulation equipment, which determine the size of the amplifiers and antennas
- The robustness of the link and the equipment, which determine the quality and availability of the service
