Important Issues Facing the Industry 1 of 3: Technologies that Create Opportunities with Serge Van Herck

Newtec's CEO Serge Van Herck was asked by WTA to talk about technologies that create opportunities and to bring more light into how Newtec helps to reduced costs and to manage complexity.

Randall Barney (right photo), Membership Director of the World Teleport Association (WTA) has interviewed our CEO, CCO and VP Asia as part of WTA's Executive Dialogue series called "Important Issues Facing the Industry Today" (get here an overview).

It's your choice now to watch the video or to read the interview text below including additional information and links:

Randall: Thinking about the last couple of years, what technology innovations have made the biggest difference in the satellite/fiber services business?

Serge: Well, Randall, I see two major technologies that are making a difference in our industry:

  • The first one is the introduction of the new standard – DVB-S2X – that is definitely going to further improve our industry by giving higher efficiency and higher speeds.
  • The other one is a typical Newtec technology called Mx-DMA™ which is a new return technology which won the WTA award for most innovative technology earlier this year. This technology is also going to shape the future of our industry.

Randall: Please give us one or two examples of how specific technologies created opportunities, reduced costs or helped manage complexity.

Serge: Our new Newtec Dialog system that we launched last year is quite successful and it helps our customers to access different types of markets. The flexibility of the system helps them to access different types of markets, be it consumer broadband, mobility, or machine-to-machine (M2M). So that is the strength of the technology. It is quite a complex technology, but for the customer, our customers, it helps them to improve and simplify their business as they can now with the same hub infrastructure – Newtec Dialog – access different vertical markets.

Randall: Are there technologies you see coming down the road in the next year or two that will have a positive impact on the transmission business?

Serge: The most important transformation that we will see in the next two years is definitely DVB-S2X, the new standard that was released last year. It will take some time to have the chip sets available but once they are available we will see a big impact on our industry because it will help increase efficiency and increase speeds that we can realize over satellite.

Randall: What product or technology innovation would you most like to see arrive in the next few years?

Serge: What I would really like to see in the next few years is further focus and development on the antenna side, especially for mobility and to further reduce the complexity of installing an antenna. That will definitely help our industry to grow further.
