With the advent of High Throughput Satellites, the VSAT industry is at a crossroads. Bandwidth prices have been decreasing dramatically allowing operators and service providers to target mass markets. But satellite user terminal prices are still high for the consumer market and represent a barrier to usage and take-up. Is there room for standardization to bring down these costs? Can we dream of a day when a modem of one manufacturer might inter-work with the hub of another? Can we do for satellite what GSM has done for cellular telephony?
